Farmstay and Japanese ‘moonshine sake’ making!

Eat, drink, experience: stay with a local family and enjoy cooking, bird-watching and sake making experiences!

Highlights

How much local experience can you fit into 24 hours? Challenge accepted! 

Stay overnight with a local farming family at their home in northern Miyagi Prefecture. Get to know your host family as you prepare dinner and learn how to make local dishes before eating them together! 

Wake up early the next morning and head to Lake Izunuma to see the famous morning flight of white-fronted geese! The lake becomes home to thousands of migratory birds during the Autumn and Winter months, attracting bird watchers and photographers from all over Japan hoping to catch the moment they all take flight together. 

After a healthy home-cooked breakfast, head to a local pottery workshop to make your own sake cup! You’ll be needing some sake to drink from it, though, so you might as well hang around and learn how to make ‘doburoku’, Japanese ‘mooshine’ or unrefined sake!

Meet at the Izunuma Local Produce Centre where your homestay family will be waiting to pick you up.

Prepare dinner and learn how to make traditional home-style cooking before eating it with your family! 

6:30

Wake up early and head to Lake Izunuma to watch the famous morning flight of migratory birds!

7:30

Enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea to warm up!

9:00

Take a workshop in how to make Japanese ‘moonshine’ or ‘Doburoku’ – unrefined sake! 

10:30

You’ll be needing something to drink the sake from, so next head to a local pottery workshop to make your own sake cup!! 

Both your ‘moonshine’ sake and sake cup will be ready in about 3-4 weeks time! Leave your details so they can be sent to you and remind you of your 24 hours of local experience in Izunuma!
