Gifts from the deep: pair oysters with sake matured under the sea! (+ lodging)

A rare chance to taste Japanese sake matured in nature's best cellar ~ under the sea!

Highlights

Embrace your inner pirate and set out on a local boat to uncover treasure from the deep! This is the best kind of treasure – treasure you can eat and drink!

Local sake brewers and oyster farmers in Rikuzentaka (coastal Iwate Prefecture) have come up with a genius way to mature Japanese sake at the perfect stable temperature, in nature’s best cellar – under the sea! Bottles of freshly pressed sake (genshu) are submerged into the ocean alongside shelves of oysters and matured for up to a one year. Once ready for eating and drinking, the oysters and sake are pulled up onto a local boat for guests to enjoy the perfect combination of delicious juicy oysters and smooth, umami-filled sake!

On this tour, enjoy the rare opportunity to be on the boat to watch as the oysters and sake are pulled up onto the boats. Learn how to clean up the oyster shells and prepare them for steaming before enjoying the ultimate ‘mariage’ of oysters and sake.

Warm-up for the experience with an overnight stay at a traditional Japanese hot-spring hotel the evening before. Soak in the baths and enjoy an indulgent feast of  local cuisine for dinner and breakfast!
