Embrace your inner pirate and set out on a local boat to uncover treasure from the deep! This is the best kind of treasure – treasure you can eat and drink!
Local sake brewers and oyster farmers in Rikuzentaka (coastal Iwate Prefecture) have come up with a genius way to mature Japanese sake at the perfect stable temperature, in nature’s best cellar – under the sea! Bottles of freshly pressed sake (genshu) are submerged into the ocean alongside shelves of oysters and matured for up to a one year. Once ready for eating and drinking, the oysters and sake are pulled up onto a local boat for guests to enjoy the perfect combination of delicious juicy oysters and smooth, umami-filled sake!
On this tour, enjoy the rare opportunity to be on the boat to watch as the oysters and sake are pulled up onto the boats. Learn how to clean up the oyster shells and prepare them for steaming before enjoying the ultimate ‘mariage’ of oysters and sake.
Warm-up for the experience with an overnight stay at a traditional Japanese hot-spring hotel the evening before. Soak in the baths and enjoy an indulgent feast of local cuisine for dinner and breakfast!
Check-in to your lodging at Ofunato Hot-springs.
You will stay in a traditional Japanese style room (2 people to 1 room) and have full access to the hot-spring baths with ocean views! Included in your stay is a full course Japanese style dinner of local cuisine and tasty breakfast the next morning.
Meet at Numata-Wakinosawa fishing port from where the tour will begin!
Be given an overview of the day’s activities and schedule.
Board a local fishing boat and be taken out to the oyster farms. Enjoy watching as the oyster shelves and ocean-matured sake are raised up from the deep!
Head back to shore and to a local seafood cultivation center to prepare your treasure for eating/drinking!
Start by washing and removing barnacles from the ocean-matured sake bottle!
Get to work cleaning and preparing the fresh oysters for steaming (work up that appetite!)
Time to taste! Pair steamed local oysters with the ocean-matured sake for the ultimate ‘mariage’ of tastes from coastal Japan!
(It’s never too early to start drinking sake. Breakfast of champions!)
Continue the taste-testing at home! Take home a tasting set of local sake and compare the difference between freshly pressed sake (genshu) and the same variety which has been matured under the sea.
