Shiogama City boasts Japan’s largest landing of fresh tuna at its famous port. On this tour, head straight to the centre of the action and enjoy the opportunity to watch the daily tuna auction (from above) at Shiogama Fish Market. Learn about the different varieties of tuna and fish that pass through the market everyday, before heading nearby to the smaller local wholesale market (Nakaoroshi) to sample some of the fresh produce, straight from the back of the boat!
At the market, your guide will provide you with a set of rice, soup and freshly fried Japanese-style egg omelet while you wander the market stalls to purchase your favourite seafood toppings from the vendors themselves. Chat with locals, sample the goods and start your day right with some of the highest quality, freshest seafood you’ll ever have the chance to try!
The tour begins from Sendai Station and will end at the market following breakfast. Return to the station with your guide or continue your day of sight-seeing in the Shiogama/Matsushima Bay area!

Buy your train ticket at the ticket machines (330 JPY between Sendai → Higashi-Shiogama)
Take the JR Senseki Line to Higashi-Shiogama Station.
Arrive at JR Higashi-Shiogama Station.
Walk with your guide towards Shiogama Fish Market.
Enjoy the busy excitement of the daily tuna auction at Shiogama Fish Market.
Your guide will take you around the publicly accessible areas of the market to learn more about the tuna fishing industry in Shiogama and the varieties of tuna that pass through the market everyday.
Having worked up an appetite looking at all those fish – it’s time for breakfast! Walk towards the local Naraoroshi Fish Market with your guide.
Arrive at Nakaoroshi Fish Market.
Walk along the many fish-monger venders and keep an eye out for your favourite cuts of fresh seafood!
Chat to the locals and taste the fresh produce as you go. If you time it right, you may even catch one of the fish mongers carving up a giant tuna!
Your guide will purchase a set of rice, soup and freshly made Japanese-style egg omelet from the counter at the back of the market stalls. All that is left is for you to buy your own favourite toppings of fresh seafood from the vendors to create your own original seafood bowl for breakfast!
