Escape to the picturesque countryside of Naruko (Miyagi Prefecture) and spend the day reconnecting with nature in Kawatabi Onsen; a small hot spring town with a history of over 1000 years, known for its diverse natural beauty.
This tour package will allow visitors to completely immerse themselves into the nature and unique local lifestyle of Naruko. Meet with local conservation group ‘NPO Shinrin’ who are making efforts to restore declining forest areas, protect the local ecosystems and preserve the traditions of the area. Learn about their activities as you explore the beautiful ‘Ecola Forest’ and take part in various local experiences designed to help visitors appreciate not only the hot-spring bathing culture of Naruko, but the blessings of the local environment and importance of protecting it.
First, visit newly renovated farm-to-table restaurant ‘Rishu’ and enjoy a local lunch served in traditional lacquered table-ware. After fueling up on fresh veggies, expend your energy exploring the beautiful Ecola Forest area with pruning experience! The afternoon program will be spent embracing your inner artist with some traditional local woodcraft, such as making your own pair of lacquered chopsticks and hand-painting a mini ‘Kokeshi’ doll (both of which you can take home with you as memento of your experience!). Of course, those who wish to will also have time at the end of the program for a relaxing soak in the mineral-rich waters of the local hot-spring baths!*
*Optional visit to hot-spring: 300 JPY for adults, 100 JPY for children, 200 yen for small towel..
Once all participants have gathered at the station, start with a quick introduction to the tour.

Local lunch of seasonal dishes at popular farm-to-table restaurant ‘Rishu’ served in traditional lacquered table-ware.
Head to the headquarters of ‘NPO Shinrin’ at Ecola Forest for an introduction to their conservation activities and the pruning experience activity.
Pruning experience in Ecola Forest (roughly 30 mins)
Traditonal woodcraft experience ①: lacquerware chopsticks workshop at ‘NPO shinrin’
Experience making your own lacquerware chopsticks that you can take home with you as a memento
(around 70 mins)
Quick coffee break and free time to explore the store!
Traditional woodcraft experience ②: Kokeshi painting at Kagamoku
Try your hand at painting your own traditional mini Kokeshi doll (around 60 mins)
Look at how cute they are!
Optional: Visit hot-spring baths at “Fujishima Ryokan”:
Entrance to communal baths: 300 JPY for adults, 100 JPY for children, 200 yen for small towel.
* Enjoy a relaxing hot-spring bath at a traditional ryokan inn located a short 2-minute walk from Kagamoku.
* If you do not wish to take a bath, enjoy some free time to relax at Kagamoku and surrounding neighborhood (cafes and miscellaneous shops).
Once all participants have regrouped, head back to JR Kawatabi Station.
