Level-up your sake drinking game with this masterclass at the well renown Urakasumi Sake Brewery in Shiogama City. Urakasumi have been producing sake in Shiogama since 1724, including the sacred ceremonial sake used at Shiogama Shrine, the most important Shinto shrine in northern Japan. Known for its ‘classic and elegant’ sake, Urakasumi varieties pair excellently with the abundant local seafood which Shiogama is famous for.
During this masterclass, not only will you have the opportunity to sample several varieties of Urakasumi’s premium range of sake, you will learn how to best appreciate each drop; from the optimum drinking vessel to what kind of food to pair it with! You will be provided with a range of tasty bites of local produce to experiment pairing with, including the locally produced ‘moshio’ (seaweed salt). Having produced moshio for over a thousand years, Shiogama locals often add seaweed salt to various foods, including using it as a substitute for soy-sauce when eating sushi, as well as adding a unique dimension of flavour by dissolving it in their mouths before drinking sake.
Gain new knowledge that you can take back with you and apply when pairing sake with dishes from home! The next step on your journey to becoming a true sake connoisseur!
Meet your guide in front of the ticket gates at JR Hon-Shiogama Station (JR Senseki Line) and walk together to Urakasumi Sake Brewery (approx 7 mins).
Begin your sake masterclass! A resident sake expert at Urakasumi Sake Brewery will introduce several varieties of sake produced at the brewery. Not only will you learn about the characteristics of each variety, but you will have the chance to taste using different shaped glasses and drinking techniques to compare the impact on the flavour and aroma of the sake. You will also enjoy pairing the sake with a selection of tasty bites of local produce from the Shiogama/Miyagi area, including local seafood and even ‘moshio’ (seaweed salt) for a unique flavour sensation!
Tour ends after the tasting session.
Continue to explore Shiogama City on your own or opt to add a local lunch of fresh sushi (and more sake, of course!) at a local restaurant for + 3000 yen.
