Sendai City may be the largest metropolis in the Tohoku region and home to all of the conveniences of a big city, but just a short walk from the city centre and you’ll find yourself surrounded by parks, rivers, forests and mountains that seem more likely to be inhabited by Totoro or Princess Mononoke, than one million people!
Get your day of sight-seeing off to an active start with a light hiking course through the forests of Mt. Aobayama, just a 10 min subway ride from Sendai Station.
Your guide will take you through lush forests of beech trees and along mountain streams as you listen to the sounds of local wildlife (and maybe even meet some along the way)!
Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head back into the city centre to enjoy a brunch of fresh seafood or ramen at ‘Sendai’s Kitchen’ the Asaichi morning market, or (if you’re more of a caffeine and fry-up type) one of your guide’s favourite local cafes!
Meet your guide outside the ticket gates of Aobayama Station on the Tozai line of the Sendai Subway.
(They will be holding the ‘Tohoku Local Secret Tours’ logo)
Walk for 10 minutes to the beginning of the hiking trail and check out the course.
Leave the city behind and head off into the lush beech-tree forest.
Listen to the sounds of the birds and wildlife – maybe even meet some, if you’re lucky! Time your visit right and discover some rare alpine plants.
Head back to the city centre. After all that hiking, you’ll be ready for some local food!
Choose to explore the sights and smells of Sendai’s morning market and savour some fresh seafood or ramen, or perhaps let your guide lead you to their favourite local cafe for a coffee and some all-day breakfast!
