The tsunami caused significant damage to the composition of sand and soil in Matsushima Bay. Residents and tourists throw sand and stones into the bay to promote the regeneration of natural seaweeds. Seaweed also plays an important role in the growth of Matsushima’s famous oysters.
Residents and tourists regularly throw sand and stones into the bay by hand to personally contribute to the recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake.
