Weekend in Coastal Miyagi: by request

Spend the weekend soaking up the sights, flavours and culture of coastal Miyagi!

Escape the city for a rejuvenating weekend in beautiful coastal Miyagi. Reconnect with nature and get you fill of ‘vitamin sea’ as you walk sections of the Michinoku Coastal Trail and explore the sacred wilderness of Kinkasan Island. Ten years following the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami, experience first-hand the incredible recovery of the coastal region and be inspired by the resilient and hopeful spirit of the local people. In Miyagi you will be welcomed not as a visitor, but as one of the locals yourself, as you share meals and moments together. Highlights include a tasting session and special course dinner designed in collaboration with Otokoyama Honten Sake Brewery and a feast of fresh local oysters and scallops at a waterfront oyster shack.

Overnight accommodation at Kesennuma Plaza Hotel (single room), English speaking guide and cost of transport from / back to departure point (JR Sendai Station) are covered in the tour fee.

Meet your guide and group in front of the stained glassed windows on the 2F of JR Sendai Station.

Transfer to Onagawa via the local train line, departing JR Sendai Station at 8:15 and arriving at JR Onagawa at 9:45.

While waiting for the ferry, take some time to explore the Onagawa waterfront area, including some of the ruins from the 3/11 Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami disaster.

Board the ferry to Kinkasan Island! Your captain will share some local information throughout the journey before you arrive around 30 mins later at 11:05.

Spend some time looking around the island and capturing the beautiful scenery, including the 500 wild deer that roam around the turf. Weather permitting, there may even still be some wild cherry blossoms in bloom!

Your guide will show you around the several ‘power spots’ of Koganeyama Shrine. The deities of this shrine are said to grant worshippers with financial fortune, especially if you visit over three consecutive years!

For lunch, feast on a delicious ‘obento’ lunchbox of fresh sushi! (Vegetarian options available)

Take the ferry back to Onagawa Port (around 30 mins).

Take a private taxi a little further up the coast to Kesennuma City, arrive at around 17:00.

Enjoy a tasting session at Otokoyama Honten Sake Brewery followed by a special course dinner featuring dishes made with local ingredients and expertly paired with 3-4 varieties of Otokoyama sake.

If you have enough room (save some!) visit nearby ‘Black Tide Brewing’ craft-beer brewery to sample their incredible selection of local beers, including some made in collaboration with Otokoyama Sake Brewery.

Check-in to your accommodation and enjoy a long soak in the outdoor hot-spring baths.

08:30 (DAY TWO)

After breakfast at the hotel, move by private taxi to the Karakuwa Peninsula.

Get your daily fill of ‘vitamin sea’ on a guided trek around part of the Michinoku Coastal Trail (coffee break included). Soak up the impressive sights along the Pacific coast.

After working up an appetite, feast on fresh local oysters and scallops as you chat with the friendly owners of a local oyster-shack. (Vegetarian options available)
