If you look hard enough (or climb high enough!) it’s usually possible to find some trees in bloom in mid-April to early-May.

4HOURS

Some of the best cherry blossom destinations can actually be found hidden away in local neighbourhood parks, gardens or lining countryside rivers – so, grab your picnic basket!

On this four hour plan we will take you to the best cherry blossoms in the local area that we KNOW will be in bloom on the day. You don’t have to travel too far to enjoy some quality ‘Hanami’ (flower viewing) away from the tourist crowds! 

 

6HOURS

You’ll be surprised how much you can experience in four hours when you’re traveling with private transport!

Starting from Sendai City, a four hour course can take you to most areas within Miyagi Prefecture. 

 

EXAMPLE COURSE (Spring): Cherry blossoms in Ogawara

Leave Sendai in the morning and head to southern Miyagi to see the incredible ‘Hitome-Senbon-Zakura'(1000 cherry blossoms in one glance) in Ogawara. 

Join the locals as they picnic beneath the trees! Enjoy a traditional ‘Obento’ lunchbox made from local ingredients and sip on some local sake (or green tea) under the pink blossoms.

Drive a little further to Funaoka to ride the cable-car and enjoy panoramic views of forests of cherry blossoms below.

Call into Shiroishi Castle for a spot of history and culture before heading back to Sendai City.

 

8HOURS

An 8 hour course gives you a whole day to play with, extending your options into Yamagata, Akita, Iwate and Fukushima prefectures!

 

EXAMPLE COURSE (Spring): ‘Hana-yori-dango’  in Iwate 

Enjoy some traditional ‘Hanami’ (flower viewing) in the incredible Tenshochi Park, in Kitakami (Iwate Prefecture). 

 

Drive an hour South to Ichinoseki City’s beautiful ‘Genbikei Gorge’. Enjoy a walk along the gorge lined with cherry blossoms! Try some of the famous ‘flying dumplings!’ 

 

Return to Sendai City.

Your options are endless!

Enjoy the full Tohoku experience and freedom to take your time exploring destinations further off the beaten path. 

Perhaps stay overnight at a countryside Ryokan Inn or traditional hot spring, deep in the mountains.

EXAMPLE COURSE (Spring): The complete ‘Spring in Tohoku’ experience. 

Spend two days traveling to some of the best locations for cherry blossoms in Tohoku. 

Choose from a range of cultural activities, local food and unique experiences.

Start by driving north to Hirosaki City in Aomori and enjoy a private ‘Hanami’ picnic at one of Japan’s largest cherry blossom festivals.

 

Stay overnight in Aomori, before setting-off to experience two seasons in one day: first, a drive through the breathtaking ‘snow corridor’ of Mt. Hachimantai.

 

Next, continue on to the picturesque town of Kakunodate in Akita Prefecture; famous for its weeping cherry blossoms that line streets of old samurai residences. 

Return to Sendai City.
