Kakunodate is a former castle town which flourished during the Edo period. Known as the “Little Kyoto of Tohoku”, the town is home to a district 800 meters in radius consisting of samurai residences and traditional architecture.
With an experienced local guide, this half-day tour visits both the merchant district and the samurai district of Kakunodate: experience local craftsmanship (Kabazaiku cherry-bark carving), taste and compare soy sauce at the historic Ando Brewery, and be guided inside a nationally protected samurai residence on Samurai Street.

Your guide will meet you at Co-Working Space ORENCHI in central Kakunodate at 9:00 AM or 2:00 PM (pick-up at JR Kakunodate Station also available). The tour ends at the Samurai Street.

Ando Soy Sauce and Miso Brewery – tour of the historic storage warehouse and tasting of three types of soy sauce. Duration: 1 hour.

Visit Bukeyashiki (Samurai Street) – enter one of the nationally protected samurai residences. Duration: 1 hour.
