Just a short train ride from Hirosaki, the small castle town of Kuroishi feels like a page from another era. Its famous Komise-dori — a long, covered arcade where shops have sheltered under low wooden eaves for centuries — is one of the most atmospheric streets in all of Tohoku, and yet it rarely appears in guidebooks.
On this 90-minute guided town walk, a local expert will lead you through the heart of Kuroishi, weaving together stories of the town’s samurai past, its sake-brewing heritage, and the everyday life that still thrives here today.
Along the way, you’ll peek into stores that have been fixtures of the community for generations, pause at historical landmarks, and stop for a coffee at one of the town’s favourite local cafés.
