A festival is simply not a festival in Sendai without the exciting and colourful ‘Suzume-odori’ (Sparrow dance)! Seeing the graceful dancers jump, turn and wave their fans to the sounds of the lively ‘Hayashi’ festival music is enough to make anyone want to join in.
If you’ve always wanted to give it a go but haven’t had the chance (or perhaps the confidence!) here is the opportunity for you!
Get caught up in the festival spirit at an introductory ‘Suzume-odori’ workshop and festival after-party!!
Learn more about the dance and master the basic steps at a 60 min workshop run by a Sendai local and Suzume-odori veteran dancer!
In true festival style, once the dancing is over it’s time for the after party! Head downstairs to local izakaya ‘Senkichi’ where you can celebrate your new found skills with some new friends over a tasting set of three varieties of Japanese sake paired with tasty local food.
Meet in front of Izakaya ‘Senkichi’. The workshop will take place on the 2F of the restaurant.
Senkichi is located a short walk from Exit 2 of Kotodai-koen station on the Namboku subway line (Google maps link here).
Learn about the origins of Sendai’s ‘Suzume odori’ (sparrow dance) and master the basic steps under the careful instruction of a Suzume-odori veteran dancer (and English speaker!)
Take a short break after mastering your dance moves and final pose!
Party time!!
In true Japanese festival fashion, enjoy a lively after party with your fellow dancers at Izakaya ‘Senkichi’. The party plan will include three varieties of local Japanese sake paired with three local dishes!
Rub shoulders with the locals and chat to your new friends about your plans to come back to dance in the Aoba Festival next year!!
Experience ends at ‘Senkichi’.
